Summer Snack: Cool Pops Getting Hot

No summertime treat, perhaps, tastes quite as good—or is quite as trendy—as paletas, the brightly-colored and ice-cold frozen fruit bars that have long been a summertime favorite in Latin America but have recently gained a following in the United States. Dairy- or water-based and packed with fresh fruit, paletas may not be new, but their popularity is growing, as evidenced by these four spots where you can get in on this summer's coolest trend.

Zora Dora’s in Beacon, New York is serving up the pops in a variety of gourmet flavors including pineapple lime-chili sea salt and toasted sesame-honey. (Our friends at Jauntsetter like the dulce de leche-caramelized banana.) Chef and owner Steven Astorino crafts his paletas in small batches with a focus on fresh and local ingredients.

King of Pops opened in Atlanta in March, and offers flavors ranging from strawberry lemongrass to chocolate sea salt. These treats can be purchased at the King of Pops cart, found at the corner of North Ave. and North Highland or at the Irwin Street Market. Menus are posted daily on Twitter.

Locopops in North Carolina has expanded their operation this season, so customers can now sample flavors such as pomegranate tangerine and Mexican chocolate at ten locations in and around Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Seasonal flavors get more creative and include guava lime jalapeno and Thai rice pudding.

And at Chelsea Market in New York City, People’s Pops now sells paletas in flavors like strawberry basil, made, like Zora Dora's, with local produce and organic dairy products. A favorite of writer David Lida's, People’s Pops can also be purchased at the Whole Foods on 97th and Columbus or at the Brooklyn Flea.

Don't forget about Sol Pops in Portland, Oregon! Is it because we are on the Left Coast? :) Sol Pops has been selling at farmers markets and festivals since 2007, and have done 40 flavors to date, including Cucumber Lime Jalapeno, Carrot Lime Ginger, and Basil Lemon. We just opened the Sol Pops Shop for Summer 2010, and now offer an expanded menu of 20 rotating flavors...
