Long Live Gourmet

Gourmet_magazine.jpg
Respects to Gourmet magazine flooded the blogosphere yesterday. Gabriella Gershenson of Time Out New York’s The Feed was one of the first, then came Gawker, the Atlantic, and New York magazine’s Grub Street blog, which wrote a tribute post about keeping track of all the other tribute posts. We were too rattled by the news to be eloquent, and decided instead to flip through old issues and drink Manhattans.

We’re still not very eloquent, but we want to show Gourmet at least a drop of the ocean-sized thanks it deserves. Years of reading the magazine taught me much more about cooking than culinary school ever did; my Moveable Feast cohort Mollie wrote her senior thesis on it. We both owe Ruth Reichl and the entire Gourmet staff so much.

On Sunday, we will host an RIP Gourmet dinner party. It will be more like an Irish wake than a catered reception—the attendees (all Gourmet lovers) will bring their favorite dishes from past issues of the magazine. We’ll tweet live from the potluck feast; follow us at @juliabainbridge and @molliechen. We’ll also post pictures and quotes on this blog once our guests have left a little fatter and happier, and our many pots and pans have been scrubbed and hung to dry.

Many of us are still going through the various stages of grief - denial, anger, bargaining, the full gamut.

Holding a wake sounds like a wonderful way to honor the passing of our dear friend, Gourmet. Coming together around food seems like the appropriate way to pay tribute to the soon-to-be departed.

On Sunday I shall raise a glass in sorrow for the loss of my friend of so many years.
